Is mafia activity worse than gang activity

Southside Serpents

Southside Serpents

The Southside Serpents (often just as Serpents are a gang who predominantly live on the south side of Riverdale, hence the name. Headed by Jughead Jones (he's the serpent king and his serpent queen is Betty Cooper), the serpents usually hang out at a local bar called Whyte Wyrm.

In particular, the Serpents aren't just based in Riverdale and are made up of several nationwide sets, such as the Centerville Serpents and the Toledo Serpents, led by Gladys Jones. They are also north of the Canada-United States border, according to Jughead.

To become a Southside Serpents, one must undergo an initiation ceremony. As is tradition, there are four stages; First of all, every new member has to take care of the Serpents dog "The Beast", also known as the hot dog. Second, they must be memorized and recited in the order given. These are the rules that the Southside Serpents live by. Third, they have to get a knife from the Serpents' rattlesnake cage. Finally, the final stage, known as "the glove," involves a physical display of loyalty and strength, particularly jumping into the gang by its members, which essentially requires the initiate to endure just multiple blows to all areas of the body get up and stand firm. After completing the last task, the initiate is congratulated by shaking hands with the other members, a sign of "good athleticism", and given the Serpent jacket, which is now accepted as one of their own. This final stage shows a mark of respect within the serpents as they must be ready to die for one another. Byrdie claimed that if women wanted to join the "club" they would have to do the "serpent dance," an outdated, sexist serpent tradition that Toni tried to ban despite the prevailing misogyny.

In chapter thirty-five: "Brave New World," FP retires as the leader of the Serpents and steps down from the throne, introducing Jughead as the new Serpent King. As his first role as King, Jughead grants Cheryl Serpents membership and presents her with a custom red Serpent jacket. However, Cheryl and Toni were both later banished from the Serpents after defying Jughead's rules.

After graduation, the serpents seemed to break up when Jughead went to the University of Iowa, though Sweet Pea stayed behind to get what was left. And when Toni came back from the Highsmith, the two revived the Serpents under Toni's leadership, who was crowned Serpent Queen. The Serpents would then pull together their money to buy La Bonne Nuit from Hiram Lodge and convert it into the Whyte Wyrm. Through one of their connections, the Serpents have also organized a lucrative trucking business which is their main source of income.

The Serpents date from the 1940s when Riverdale was founded. The serpent and the laws were all based on the Uktena tradition. The uktena is a horned snake and / or a water snake. Before there was a Riverdale, all of the land belonged to the Uktena. Unfortunately, according to Thomas Topaz, a founding member of the Southside Serpents, they were butchered. When his grandfather was a baby, there was a raid led by Riverdale's General Pickens. The battle lasted 12 minutes, but the carnage was total and wild. General Pickens, whose statue stands proudly in Pickens Park, was responsible for the massacre of men, women and children. When Thomas' grandfather died, Thomas and the remaining Uktena started the snakes to keep the family together.

Before Jason's murder, FP once became their leader after he was forced to resign from Andrews Construction. This is because his criminal activities had made him too liable to the company.

After Polly Cooper became pregnant, Jason Blossom went to the Serpents, he needed money for him and Polly to run away together. The Serpents used him to deliver drugs that FP later made clear were marijuana, as a clean cut kid like him would never be suspected. However, the last amount of drugs they gave him was never given, and they suspected he had just run away from them until his body washed up on the Sweetwater River.

FP was almost blamed for Jason's murder because police found a gun in his trailer. It was later revealed that Cliff was the one who shot his own son in cold blood and that FP suffered the fall to protect his son Jughead.

The laws

Editor's note: The events in Silent night, horror night in which Sweet Pea claims the First Law "A serpent never stands alone." directly contradict what Jughead said in " The horror comes at ten "stated . "A serpent never shows cowardice." In addition, Penny stated, "The Serpent Law says you cannot harm any of your own." Whether this is the unknown 3rd law or a variation on the formulation of the 5th law remains unclear. In The seeds of violence Jughead recites "A serpent never sheds its skin," which FP confirms to be one of the serpent's laws. However, it is unclear whether it is the unknown 3rd law or a variation on one of the others.
  1. A serpent never stands alone / A serpent never shows cowardice.
  2. If a serpent ends up in prison or dies, the others take care of his family.
  3. Unknown
