Why is interior design very important

Eva Brenner: How do you recognize a good interior designer

"Why do I actually need an interior designer? I can also furnish it myself!" - I hear such sentences every now and then. As a graduate engineer for interior design, I feel a little sad when the raison d'être of an entire professional group is carelessly questioned. Often only because you haven't (yet) understood our job.

Interior designers are not interior decorators. And no decorators. But no architects either, although of course we have also learned and apply many of the basics that an architecture degree includes. A pronounced sense of space, light, sound, shapes and materials is of course also part of our work.

Private builders like to save themselves the hiring of an interior designer. "I have an architect, that's enough" - I also know this sentence. A colleague friend of mine usually replies with a question: "What is more important: How the house is built or how it feels when you are in it?"

Interior designers put the residents at the center of their planning.

Eva Brenner

Many architects plan a house from the outside in. A good interior designer works from the other direction: We put the residents at the center of our planning and make sure that they feel comfortable later on.

Another important quality of a good interior designer is therefore an excellent knowledge of human nature. It should be extremely important to him to get to know his clients well and understand exactly what moves them. It doesn't help if, in the end, the interior designer is the only one who is happy.

This is how you can find the right interior designer

On the other hand, I think that at the end of the day you can tell if the interior designer didn't feel comfortable with the project. After all, we are united by an enormous passion for design. It's more than a job. In a way, I'm always on duty because I'm on the road a lot and I am constantly scanning the surroundings for beautiful things and soaking them up in me. And hopefully my projects will benefit from these inspirations.

But how do you find an interior designer who suits you? I would advise not to commit to just one person, but to contact several people. Preliminary talks are - and by no means everyone knows that - free of charge. In these conversations, builders can get rid of their questions and learn about the interior designer's style. Let us show you completed projects and see if you like the style.

Another tip if you are looking for an interior designer: The Association of German Interior Architects (BDIA) has a nice website on which you can view the members by place or zip code, among other things.

Design of a new hotel building

What is easy on your nerves in a construction project: Interior designers also take on part of the construction management and coordinate craftsmen and suppliers. So you also have to be good project managers who always have an eye on timely and optimal completion. There is probably no better school for time management than "At Home in Happiness", where we had to completely rebuild houses within eight days.

Fortunately, I don't have to do that with my current project. Together with my Düsseldorf office partner, the architect Björn Nolte, I am overseeing the construction of a boutique hotel in the Harz Mountains. A great challenge because in a hotel you can also deal with topics such as usage profiles, fire protection planning, escape routes and flame-retardant materials.

We have very good contact with the operating family. I think something great is emerging. And I'm very sure that in the end our clients won't doubt whether hiring an interior designer was a good idea.
