1 Samuel - Chapter 4

The ark is taken from Israel

1But Israel went out to meet the Philistines, and camped at Eben-Ezer. But the Philistines camped at Aphek(Joshua 15:53)2and stood against Israel. And the battle was widely divided, and Israel was defeated before the Philistines; and they killed four thousand men in order in the field.3And when the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Why did the LORD cause us to be smitten this day before the Philistines? Let us take with us the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Shiloh, and let it come among us, that it may save us from the hand of our enemies.(1 Samuel 14.18)
4And the people sent to Shiloh, and fetched from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which sits over the cherubim. And there were the two sons of Eli with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.(2 Samuel 6.2)5And when the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, all Israel shouted with great shouts, that the earth shouted.6But when the Philistines heard the shouting of such shouts, they said, What is the shouting of such great shouts in the Hebrew camp? And when they heard that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp,
7They were afraid, and said, God has come into the camp; and said further: Woe to us! because it did not stand so before.8Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods, who smote Egypt with all kinds of plagues in the desert?9So now you men, you Philistines, be confident that you do not have to serve the Hebrews as they served you! Be men and fight!(Judges 13.1)10The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and every one of them fled to his tent; and it was a very great battle, that thirty thousand foot soldiers fell from Israel.11And the ark of God was taken, and Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

Eli's death

12Then one of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh that day, and had torn his clothes, and had strewn earth on his head.
13And behold, when he came in, Eli was sitting on the chair that he could see the way; for his heart was timid over the ark of God. And when the man came into town, he announced it, and the whole town screamed.14And when Eli heard the loud screaming, he asked: What kind of loud tumult is that? Then the man came hurrying up and told Eli.15But Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were dark so that he could not see.(1 Samuel 3.2)16But the man said to Eli, I have come and fled from the army today. But he said, How is it, my son?
17Then the publisher answered and said, Israel fled from the Philistines, and a great battle has occurred among the people, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; for this the ark of God is taken.18But as he remembered the ark of God, he fell back from the chair by the gate and broke his neck in two and died; for he was old and a heavy man. And he judged Israel forty years.19But his daughter-in-law, Phinehas wife, was pregnant and was about to give birth. On hearing the rumor that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she doubled over and gave birth; for her woe came to her.
20And when she was dying, the women who stood by her said, Do not be afraid, you have a young son. But she didn't answer and didn't take it to heart either.(Genesis 35.17)21And she called the boy Ikabod, and said, The glory is gone from Israel. because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.(Psalm 78.61)22And said again, The glory is gone from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.
