Why did Apple stop making 32GB iPhones

Set up Apple TV correctly, set it optimally, use it effectively

Macworld UK, Simon Lohmann,

This is how you set up the Apple TV correctly in order to also use the hidden functions of the set-top box.

EnlargeSet up properly to make the Apple TV experience even more fun.

Apple and TV - that already stands for several products. Above all, of course, for the set-top box, which Apple presented to the public for the first time at a special event on September 12, 2006 - at that time still under the name iTV and expressly announced as a "hobby". Much has changed since then, the Apple TV is no longer an "iPod for the living room" that you have to synchronize with a Mac, but an independent streaming device that even uses its own version of iOS - called tvOS. Since 2015, Apple has also been offering an app called "TV", which offers shared access to all kinds of services and media libraries on Apple TV, iPad and iPhone so that you don't miss a program. And in 2019 - possibly also under the name Apple TV - a separate streaming service is to start that brings all kinds of original content into the living room and competes with Netflix and the like. The only thing that Cupertino has not built is its own television set under the name Apple TV - and that is better for the company. Apple leaves the price war in the low-margin segment to others - and may recommend one or the other device on which the current Apple TV 4K comes into its own.

With a price of around 200 euros, this is still one of the “cheap” Apple products. So it's no wonder that it is very popular with many users. Because it does not only do its job as a streaming box, thanks to the great similarity of tvOS to iOS and the Siri Remote remote control, many wonderful games can be played on it - the Apple TV is of course not yet a real competitor to Xbox and Playstation. This summer the hope flared up briefly that at least the Steam games could be played on the Apple TV. Apple and Valve are arguing about the commissions from the game purchases until now.

Before you can use all the functions, you should make sure that the Apple TV is set up correctly. By and large, this is done quite quickly and intuitively with the Apple TV. However, there are still some settings that can be personalized.

Connect Apple TV to the television

Before you can set up the Apple TV, you need to connect the set-top box to the TV. For this you need an HDMI cable, which is not included in the scope of delivery. Basically you can use any HDMI cable for the Apple TV. If you don't have a spare HDMI cable, Apple sells an Ultra High Speed 4K HDMI cable from Belkin for around 35 euros. Since this cable supports a bandwidth of up to 48 Gbit / s and a resolution of up to 4096 x 2160 pixels, it is particularly suitable for the new 4K model.

Set up Apple TV

Once you have an HDMI cable on hand, you can start setting up.

  1. Connect the power cord and connect the Apple TV to your television using an HDMI cable.

  2. Turn on the TV and switch to the correct HDMI input that the Apple TV is connected to.

  3. Press the menu button on the Siri Remote, the supplied remote control for the Apple TV. If the Apple TV is still not switched on, connect the Siri Remote to the Apple TV by pressing and holding the menu button and the "+" button.

  4. Then select your language and country.

  5. This is where your iPad or iPhone could come in handy. If iOS 9.1 or later is installed on one of your devices, you can use this to set up the network. Hold the iOS device nearby (or directly above the Apple TV) - and the relevant information for setting up the network, including the router password, will be automatically transferred. To do this, however, Bluetooth must be activated on the iOS device.

Enter password on Apple TV with Siri

You can easily dictate your email address and password to the Apple TV using Siri by selecting the appropriate input mask on the screen and then pressing the microphone button on the Siri Remote.

Password entry via the iPhone Remote App

tvOS supports the Remote app on the iPhone, making it much easier to enter your password on the iPhone or iPad instead of using the Siri Remote. Depending on how complex your password is, entering it using Siri Remote can be quite stressful and annoying.

Enable local services, Siri, screensavers and more on Apple TV

Enable or disable local services? It all depends on whether you want the themes of the screensaver to adapt to the time of day, for example. As soon as you have activated Siri, you can use the built-in microphone to give commands to the Apple TV - especially useful if you want to search Netflix and Co. for your favorite series. Send diagnostic data. Finally, Apple asks you if it can use the diagnostic data from the Apple TV, including your location.

Familiarize yourself with the home screen

Once you've set everything up, the first thing you'll see is the Apple TV's home screen. If you're familiar with the older Apple TV models, you'll notice that the home screen on the new devices is a little different from the old ones. For example, the Netflix app must first be downloaded from its own Apple TV app store before binge watching can begin. And while you're at it, take a look around the App Store. There are many interesting apps waiting to be downloaded. For example, the media libraries of public broadcasters we mentioned or Amazon Prime Video, which has been available for Apple TV since the end of 2017. Waipu.tv wants to bring its app to Apple TV shortly, at the latest then you can actually cancel your cable connection.

Change the screensaver on Apple TV

EnlargeIn addition to the standard screensaver, you can also set up your own photos as screensavers.

There are many ways to personalize the Apple TV. If you are fed up with the standard screensaver, you can go to Settings> General> Screensaver set new videos to be downloaded monthly or even weekly or daily. But be careful: the memory fills up very quickly, as a video is around 600 MB in size.

Of course, you can also use your own photos as a screen saver. You can either use the photo library, the photo stream or the iCloud photo library.

  1. Open the Photos app on the Apple TV and select an album in which the motifs for the screen savers are located.

  2. click on Screensaver to select the album accordingly.

  3. Open Settings> General> Screensaver> Screensaver type to get more setting options.

Sleep mode

The Apple TV will automatically go to sleep after 60 minutes. Some argue that these days it doesn't make too much of a difference whether devices like the Apple TV are left on overnight because of their low energy consumption. However, if the Apple TV is in the bedroom, the small device lamp could be a nuisance at night. And for the sake of the environment, energy consumption should be kept as low as possible - so why not start with the Apple TV?

To put the Apple TV to sleep, press and hold the Home button on the Siri Remote for a few seconds. The desired option will appear on the screen. To wake up the Apple TV again, press the Home button again.

Change sleep mode time

If you want to change the idle times, open Settings> General> Sleep mode and change the time. The choices are:

  • Never

  • 15 minutes

  • 40 minutes

  • 1 hour

  • 5 hours

  • 10 hours

Restart Apple TV

If you want to restart, open Settings> System> Restart. Alternatively, press and hold the menu and home buttons on the Siri Remote at the same time until the control light on the Apple TV starts to flash.

EnlargeYou can calibrate the monitor in the settings.

Activate subtitles

Press the home button three times and you will get the options VoiceOver, Zoom, Closed Captions (CC) and Subtitles. To (de) activate the subtitles, simply swipe down on the Siri Remote's touchscreen.

Take a screenshot on Apple TV

Yes, that is also possible, but it is a bit more cumbersome than on the iPhone or iPad.

  1. Download Apple Xcode onto your Mac from the Mac App Store.

  2. Install Xcode.

  3. Connect your Apple TV to your Mac via USB-C or a USB cable.

  4. Open Xcode. Choose Window> Devices> Apple TV.

  5. Click on "Take screenshot"

Record videos from the Apple TV display

You can even record videos from Apple TV. To do this, follow the next steps:

  1. Connect your Apple TV to your Mac via USB-C or USB cable.

  2. Open QuickTime on the Mac. Choose File> New Video Recording

  3. Click the arrow to the right of the record button and choose Apple TV from Camera and Microphone Settings.

  4. Start recording.

Fix problems on Apple TV

If you have any problems with the Apple TV, first check that the operating software is up-to-date. Apple will periodically release updates that should fix most problems.

Open for it Settings> System> System Updates. If there is an update available, download and install it.

TV app on the Apple TV

EnlargeThe TV app offers useful features and provides a good overview of the offers.

“Watch your favorite shows and movies anywhere, discover new content, and learn about new video apps. With the Apple TV app, all of this is possible in one place. ”This is how Apple explains the app for iOS and tvOS devices. The biggest difference to comparable apps: You cannot watch content directly in the TV app. Instead, the TV app offers a kind of overview of what you could theoretically watch, like a kind of video library (older readers will still remember the video rental shops). Selected offers of various services, including Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, My5 or iPlayer, are collected in the TV app and displayed to the user.

EnlargeTV app is a media library for all video content

The big advantage here is that the offers can be compared wonderfully. For example, do you want to watch a movie that is on both iTunes and Netflix? The TV app ensures that you do not pay for any content from providers that you can see "for free" from others, provided you have a corresponding account with the providers. If you use the TV app for a long time, a helpful feature appears, which helps you not to lose track. All the content you have seen (regardless of which provider you viewed it from) is presented to you in an ad. So you no longer have to think about whether the film you started watching a few days ago was shown on Netflix, Amazon Prime or a completely different provider. Just click the appropriate icon and the movie or series will pick up where you left off.
