Vacation on the Thai island of Phuket

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, but with a length of 50 km and 22 km width it is quite manageable and can be easily discovered within a few days. The island is located in the very west of Thailand, at a small tip only separated from the mainland by a narrow waterway. In addition to Bangkok, the country's second international airport is located directly on Phuket to enable tourists to travel comfortably. If you've just discovered Phuket for yourself, I have to warn you a bit, because thousands, oh millions, holidaymakers worldwide have already fallen in love with this island. Fortunately, there are still enough beautiful corners on the island where you will only meet a few tourists. Phuket can offer you both: Western standards at the highest level or authentic, typical Asian life. Depending on the region, you will find well-known 5 star hotels, restaurant chains and parties à la Ballermann, or small wooden huts, street food and cultural sites on Phuket.

The different regions on Phuket

Depending on your preference, you can decide whether you prefer to live as western as possible in the Thai paradise or whether you prefer to take it a little easier. The west coast of the island is particularly popular with tourists. Numerous excellent hotels are lined up here one after the other. Centrally located in the middle of the west coast Patong Beach, the most popular region for holidaymakers looking for partying and shopping. The beaches of Patong are particularly popular in the high season. Here you will find a number of restaurants and bars that are only a few meters away.

Everyone can be happy on Phuket!

Bang Tao Beach is further north. There are numerous simple beach bungalows, but also luxurious 5 star hotels. The beach is ideal for vacationers who want a little hustle and bustle but who still appreciate good western food. In the southwest you will find Kata Beach and Karon Beach. These beaches are less crowded and therefore still one real insider tip. Not far from there there are also many hotels that have their own beach section and thus enable complete relaxation. The interior of the island of Phuket is still largely covered by wild jungle and is therefore particularly suitable for adventurous excursions away from the tourist crowds.

The most beautiful beaches in Phuket - an island paradise

Do you know these pictures of white sandy beaches with turquoise sea and colorful fish? You will probably think of the Caribbean or the Maldives right away. But I can assure you, quite a few of these pictures show the beautiful onesBeaches of Thailand. Most of you will definitely book a hotel not far from the sea, but it is definitely worth visiting a few other beaches on Phuket. I especially like the following:

  • Nai Harn, Naithon Beach and thePanwa Bay: If you are looking for absolute peace and relaxation, you should take a scooter to these beaches. They are located in the northwest, on the east coast and in the south of Phuket. Not many tourists come here, so the trip is definitely worth it.
  • Mai Khao Beach: Phuket's northernmost and at the same time longest beach is far away from mass tourism and promises a lot of peace and relaxation. Here you will find above all luxurious resorts, whose guests also attach great importance to relaxed sunbathing.
  • Surin Beach: At dusk, many vacationers flock to this beach, which is just a few kilometers north of Patong Beach. In the many cool beach bars you can sip a delicious cocktail at the perfect sunset.

Of course, this is only a small selection of beaches that you can discover on Phuket. The best thing to do is rent a scooter and driveall over the islandand explore the different stretches of coast on your own.

Thai culture on Phuket

During a vacation on Phuket you should definitely not only enjoy the beaches of the island, but also get to know the great Thai culture. The Thais are considered to be particularly hospitable, polite and hard-working, so you really don't have to be afraid of contact on your exploration tours in Phuket. With a scooter you can reach the most beautiful places on the island quickly and easily.

In the Old Phuket Town the buildings are built in the Sino-Portuguese style. Because of this and the many small Chinese temples, the city looks as if it was painted. A trip here is definitely worthwhile, because in addition to the pretty buildings and temples, there are a variety of colorful markets and food stalls to visit, which give you a good insight into Thai culture. Another big highlight of the island is that Big Buddha. With a height of 45 meters, it is enthroned in the middle of the island and offers a magnificent view over the surrounding area and the sea.

The Wat Chalong is the largest temple complex on the island and presents you with a beautiful chedi - a kind of high tower within the complex - with typical southern Thai influences. You will also find the statues of the two most revered Buddhist monks on Phuket: Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang.

Increasingly, workers from the neighboring countries of Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia are also migrating here, giving the island a special one multicultural touch. Although tourism dominates everyday life on Phuket, there are actually still a few villages that do their own thing in a secluded place. The Baan Bang Rong community on the east coast of Phuket is one of them. The mostly Muslim inhabitants live mainly from fishing and agriculture. A sustainable tourism project ensured that people can continue to live and work here. Visitors have the opportunity to accompany the locals in their everyday life and learn more about the life of the more than 200-year-old community. Whether visiting a rubber plantation, the orchards with exotic fruits or the local goat farm - here you have the opportunity to get to know the authentic Phuket.

Excursions in the Phuket area

Similan Island | Phi Phi Island

James Bond Island | Khao Lak

Similan Island - diving paradise with 11 islands

Similan Island is about 100 km northwest of Phuket and is considered one of the most beautiful diving areas in the world. This group of islands consists of eleven individual islands and offers one spectacular underwater world. Almost all diving schools and travel agencies offer trips to the islands for one to several days. Some of the islands are only suitable for diving, others offer very nice snorkeling spots, nature trails and, above all, wonderful and very secluded dream beaches. The water is - as expected - crystal clear, turquoise, and of a comfortable temperature.

Phi Phi Island - Where Leonardo Discovered Paradise

The Phi Phi archipelago, which consists of six small islands, is number 1 of the must-see places in Thailand for most holidaymakers. From Phuket, the islands are approached several times a day by ferries and smaller boats. The Phi Phi Islands are located southwest of Phuket and belong to the provinceKrabi. Best known to you is Phi Phi Le, here you can find it Maya Bay, the famous stretch of beach "The Beach".

Danger: Maya Bay has been closed for an indefinite period from June 2018. You can read everything about the Maya Bay closure and other restrictions in my travel magazine.

If you like, you can stay on the main island of Koh Phi Phi Don for a few days and explore the most beautiful places and beaches in peace. The most beautiful and remote beaches can only be reached by boat, but you can escape the onslaught of day tourists and have the dream beaches almost all to yourself. I also recommend a hike to one of the island's viewpoints. After a strenuous march you will with one grandiose view over the island rewarded.

James Bond Island - 007 in Paradise

The small island with the strangely shaped rock in the Phang Nga Bay is a good bit northeast of Phuket, near the southern mainland of Thailand. In 1974 the unknown island, now James Bond Island, suddenly became famous when some scenes for the James Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun", with Roger Moore and Christopher Lee in the leading roles, were filmed there. The backdrop is definitely spectacular, but here too you can expect a mass rush every day. Boats often have to wait in the second row until there is space on the beach to moor. For a few years now there have also been souvenir stalls on the beach, of course everything in James Bond style.

Time out in Khao Lak

If you like to travel around a bit and want to get to know another paradise in Thailand, I recommend a multi-day trip to Khao Lak. The region is about 60 kilometers from Phuket and can be easily reached by bus.

Khao Lak is a paradise for those who like it quieter

It is best to ask one of the small travel agencies for a transfer that will take you to Khao Lak in an uncomplicated way. Endless beaches and authentic restaurants, species-rich national parks and fantastic sunsets await you here. A paradise for everyone who likes it quieter!

Natural highlights on Phuket

The interior of the island of Phuket is covered by dense jungle and offers a diverse flora and fauna. Wooded ridges rise here with tropical jungle landscapes and waterfalls, which are ideal for hiking, cycling and swimming. Also the Sirinat National Park in the northwest of Phuket is an Eldorado for nature lovers.

The northwest is an Eldorado for nature lovers

The park consists mainly of casuarina trees and mangrove forests, which are home to many rare species of birds. In addition to the jungle feeling, there are also some sandy beaches in the national park, mostly deserted and hundreds of meters long. Here you can relax comfortably or take a snorkeling excursion to the offshore coral reefs, where a multitude of colorful fish, sea anemones and other sea creatures cavort.

Party on Phuket - between ping pong show and ladyboys

If you are in the mood for entertainment and exuberant nightlife on Phuket, this is the one for you Patong Beach at. Here you can find the notorious one Bangla Roadwhere you can really experience everything. For those who are not that wild and hangover-esque: it's enough to just walk along here ... you don't necessarily have to go to a club. One bar follows the next on Bangla Road. There are plenty of small shops with T-shirts, chains and other typical souvenirs. Barely ten meters across the strip, you'll get your first invitation to a ping pong show. But if you need to google what that is, it's best to google it yourself - it is definitely not a harmless table tennis match.

On Bangla-Road you will meet lots of colorfully dressed lady boys who are part of the nightlife in Thailand. If you are in the mood for an interesting cabaret, I recommend the Simon Cabaret. Located between Patong Beach and Karon Beach, a grandiose show awaits you here, in which only Lady Boys perform, sing, dance and act in spectacular clothes. The wild animals, which are often displayed here for the amusement of tourists, are less pleasant. Do the animals a favor and ignore such offers!

Crime in Phuket

On Phuket, and especially in the tourist areas, is the Crime rate very low. It is extremely rare for someone to be robbed or for fistfighting. The greatest danger is rather that you will be ripped off when buying souvenirs or day trips and possibly pay three times as much. That's why you should always act a little!

In recent years, there have also been increasing reports of holidaymakers who Ripped off by Tuk Tuk drivers become. The best thing to do is to let the hotel or friendly locals tell you how much a trip from A to B would normally cost, and then you set the price with the driver before the trip. Of course, there is also the option of taking a normal taxi, which is not much more expensive - you should simply insist that the driver set the taximeter. If he doesn't want that, just get out and take another taxi.

Original Thai - healthy food on the streets of Phuket

Of course there are also fast food restaurants on Phuket that serve western food. There are also a large number of very classy restaurants where you can find a selection of international dishes. What I can only strongly recommend are the typical small cookshops that you can find on the streets where you can eat with the locals. The further away you are from the tourist areas, the more typical Thai restaurants you can find. On the one hand, the prices are incredibly low and that thai food is super tasty and healthy. Typical Thai dishes usually consist of rice or noodles with chicken, pork or beef, mixed with lots of fresh vegetables and spices such as curry. You really don't have to be afraid of unknown meat in Thailand and the hygiene in the cookshops is exemplary.

Spend your vacation in Thailand!

Thailand is really a very special country, with a unique nature and great people. Unfortunately, due to the high level of tourism, some of the authenticity has been lost, but whoever is in the more remote corners of the country and also travels to the island of Phuket, you will discover indescribable beauty. By the way, trips to Phuket are recommended all year round. From June to September it is rainy season here, but then there are only occasional, short, heavy rain showers. No matter whether you are looking for a single trip or want to go on an all-inclusive vacation - Thailand offers you both.
