Caffeine: how much of it is safe?

According to studies, caffeine should also be safe in larger quantities - with up to 10 cups of coffee a day.

Studies repeatedly report the positive effects of coffee: It should not only increase performance in the short term, but also prevent degenerative diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer's.

How does caffeine work in the body?

Caffeine has a stimulating and invigorating effect. It blocks so-called adenosine receptors in the cells, which normally ensure that tiredness sets in.

Normal consumption completely harmless

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), healthy adults of normal weight can safely consume up to 400 mg of caffeine per day. That corresponds to around ten cappuccinos, five energy drinks or five liters of Coca Cola every day. However, due to the sugar content and other additives, smaller quantities are recommended for the latter two drinks.

Up to 200 mg of caffeine taken at once are tolerable for the body. Taken shortly before bedtime, doses of 100 milligrams or more of caffeine can delay falling asleep and / or shorten the duration of sleep.

Alcohol and typical ingredients in energy drinks such as taurine or glucuronolactone are unlikely to have any undesirable interactions with caffeine.

Less caffeine for kids

The widespread misconception that caffeine is forbidden in pregnant and breastfeeding women persists. Up to 200 milligrams of caffeine per day are allowed for pregnant women, and even the full daily dose of 400 milligrams for women who are still breastfeeding.

Children and adolescents up to the age of 18 should not consume more than 3 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Young people weighing around 60 kilograms should therefore be content with a maximum of two cans of energy drinks in one day.

The dose at which the body is at risk depends not only on the general state of health, age and body weight, but also on how much caffeine the organism is already used to.

  • Healthy adults up to 400 mg or 5.7 mg / kg
