How do you like getting older
8 reasons to look forward to old age
How do you say so beautifully: You are as old as you feel.
Our thoughts and attitudes towards life determine how we feel. Many older people are not particularly looking forward to retirement. That may be because they don't fit into the common picture of age: They dress modern, travel a lot and, most importantly, they are young at heart. There are certainly many positive aspects of getting older: When you retire, you are free and can do what you want. Now you can live out your longings and make your dreams come true. We've found many reasons to look forward to old age, here are some of them.
1. Design and enjoy time freely
Having more time for yourself is arguably one of the main reasons to look forward to old age. You can finally organize your day freely. You have time to do things that were neglected in the past: a great book read, play board games, go for a walk in the forest, leaf through old photo albums or listen to music and sing for hours. Why not attend a drumming course or a photography seminar? The adult education centers have a wide range of courses. Small short vacations also broaden your horizons.
You also have time again to look after the garden properly, learn a new language, travel or rediscover hobbies and old passions that have been left behind. Or the digital possibilities of your smartphone: LINK. There are certainly many things that you have always wanted to try. You can look forward to having time to make up for everything that was left behind.
2. Try everything - live more intensely
Health in old age depends on the one hand on your lifestyle and on the other hand your attitude towards old age also plays a role. Those who look forward to old age live healthier. Perhaps you will try out a new sport? Those who try new things and do many things for the first time experience time more intensely and have more out of life.
It is not the years in our life that count, but life in our years. (Adlai Ewing Stevenson)
Have you always wanted to catch up on your school leaving certificate and study? Seniors are welcome auditors at universities - but you don't have to take exams!
Keep your curiosity, stay open and throw your cherished habits overboard! Perhaps you will change your home furnishings one day, rearrange everything and design your home the way you like it and how it suits your personality.
3. Get started with more serenity
Another reason to look forward to old age is the possibility of letting go of many old rituals and changing old habits or even eliminating them completely. You are free to organize your day however you want.
Being able to plan the day more flexibly means sleeping longer in the morning, freely choosing appointments and avoiding the rush hour in traffic. A flexible schedule can also be advantageous when shopping, because you no longer have to shop at peak times and you have time to chat with the sellers in the market or to chat with neighbors on the stairwell. You have the freedom to do all your errands in the middle of the day instead of before or after normal working hours. Stop fretting about full buses and trams, just take a bus later!
Many people become more relaxed with age, they are not so easily disturbed, nothing can stress them anymore. Seniors are more relaxed in difficult situations. On the one hand, they can fall back on a lot of experience that helps to solve problems, and on the other hand, they have fewer obligations in old age. With fewer commitments, there are fewer expectations!
4. More satisfied and more confident
Another positive side of getting older is increased self-confidence. Because as you get older, it doesn't matter what others think of you. Studies confirm that people are happier as they age and suffer less from negative emotions such as fear and anger. You've probably also noticed that satisfaction and confidence come with age. After all, you have not only experienced and achieved a lot, you can also better assess yourself and your abilities. Many people over 60 are satisfied, healthy and happy because they see the positive side of old age and look forward to the new opportunities that are presented to them. They have healthy self-confidence as they have developed strategies over the years to deal with difficult situations and problems.
5. Take on a new role
Over the years not only self-confidence and serenity come, but also wisdom. In old age you can look back on more life experience, have learned and gone through a lot in life. Often one has emerged stronger from difficult situations and can fall back on different coping strategies.
In addition, one is more capable of compromising and generally more understanding towards one's fellow human beings. Do you also belong to the group of seniors who, as they get older, develop a greater understanding of different values and views? Then you and your relatives have probably already noticed that you have become better in negotiations or are better able to mediate between friends or relatives who do not agree. This positive side of getting older is not only beneficial for your relatives, you too can look forward to old age and your new role with friends and relatives.
Development researchers say seniors see things more positively than younger ones, so start right away!
6. The good fortune to be grandma and grandpa
The serenity gained in old age also makes it possible to enjoy time with grandchildren and family. Raising children no longer gives grandparents sleepless nights, they are much more relaxed and can be of great support.
Don't you have any grandchildren? Many families are looking for loan or godparent grandmas and grandpas. There is even the possibility of going abroad as an au pair grandma or grandpa. Grandparents, even if they are only borrowed, support everyday family life and are on hand with help and advice. People who have raised their own children or who have professional and private experience in dealing with children are not only a great support for the parents, the children are also happy. Dealing with older people is an enrichment for the social development of children. Caritas, Diakonie or the Child Protection Association are happy to help with mediation.
Spending time with family and friends, laughing, eating and talking together is good for you. We need warmth and closeness to other people at any age! Maintaining social contacts and spending time with friends and family is another reason to look forward to old age.
7. Matters of the Heart
After family and work were often central in their younger years, many long to give something back in old age. Only in old age is there time for social commitment and there are many possibilities. Therefore, seniors very often do voluntary work.
You can pass on life experience and knowledge in various projects. For example, in voluntary work with children and young people as reading mentors, tutors or mentors for the transition from school to work. Seniors are a great support with this voluntary work, especially for disadvantaged young people. Nowadays there are youth welfare projects or voluntary career entry assistance in every city.
Fit seniors also support other seniors, they go for walks with them, play cards together or help with the care of pets. Sometimes an open ear is enough. Many senior citizens are also involved in helping the homeless, in clothing stores and helping refugees.
All sides benefit from the social commitment: Voluntary activities have a life-prolonging effect, strengthen self-esteem and reduce feelings of loneliness in old age and depression.
8. Perks and discounts
The positive sides of getting older also include the many visits to the theater, museum and zoo, for which you finally have time. With a pensioner ID, seniors can take advantage of the cultural and leisure activities in their area at lower prices.
Look forward to discounts on admission to the museum, theater, zoo, cinema, football game, long-distance and local transport. Library visits and the Bahncard are also cheaper. Seniors can also save on financial products, in sports clubs and swimming pools, because they receive lower tariffs.
Train and vacation trips are not only cheaper because of your pensioner ID, but also because you are more flexible in terms of time. You can go to the mountains or the beach in the off-season. Traveling to the mountains in spring or south in autumn will be worth it!
If you like group or bus trips, find out more about senior prices from the providers. Bus travel is not only convenient, it can save you a ton!
Take a deep breath and take off
So there is a lot to discover even in old age. Make use of all the possibilities that are available to you! Feeling old has little to do with the years you have been in the world. Your approach to aging and your imagination are the keys to a full and happy life.
The decisive factor is not the number of years, but what you do every day, the people you spend your time with and how you use your skills.
