What was the Mandal Commission about?

Social inequality in India

In this essential, Gernot Saalmann criticizes the fact that the considerable social inequality in India is mostly analyzed using either the concept of caste or class. In his opinion, however, one could formulate pointedly that there are actually no castes, but a multitude of phenomena with different regional names. In the same way, one could question the Marxist concept of class, which is fixated on the economic. Pierre Bourdieu offers a differently worded class term that can be used to describe conditions in India both in the past and in the present.
