Gem Therapy in Vedic Astrology

Ernst Wilhelm's alternative approach to the famous 9 gemstones in his course"Gems, Jyotish, Minerals", summarized by Joachim Schneider

Almost every recent book on Vedic astrology contains a chapter on gemology. In most books on this subject and everywhere in India, the “Navaratna”, the mostly expensive “9 gemstones” are recommended based on the natal chart: a ruby for the sun, a pearl for the moon, a red coral for Mars, and Mercury for mercury green emerald, for Jupiter a yellow sapphire, for Venus a diamond, for Saturn a blue sapphire, for Rahu a hessonite and for Ketu a cat's eye (see e.g. de Fouw 2004; Frawley, 2003; Schmieke, 2002; Braha, 1986 ).

Classical texts do not mention gemstones

The widespread use of the famous 9 gemstones is amazing as these and gemstones in general are not mentioned in the classical texts of Parashara and Jaimini. Varaha Mihira, the famous Vedic astrologer, lists most of these gemstones in the Brihat Samhita in the 5th century, but also a number of others: "Diamond, sapphire, emerald, karka, ruby, Roteisenstein, cat's eye, beryl, amethyst, Pulaka, Vimala, Vmalaka, king stone, quartz crystal, moonstone, Saugandhika (a yellow stone), opal, shell, azure, blue sapphire, hessonite (Gomed), topaz, Brahma gemstone, Jyotirasa (light essence), Sasyaka (perfect), pearl and coral.

Not until the 14th century, in the Jataka Parijata, 2:21, there is a casual reference to the use of the famous 9 gemstones, but without any connection with the natal chart. This one passage in the text has apparently made the 9 gemstones known and has led to a myth about their special therapeutic power.

Only a third of the test persons were satisfied with the 9

To what extent the 9 gemstones can really help is unclear. With the help of a jeweler friend, the Vedic astrologer Ernst Wilhelm tested these 9 gemstones on hundreds of people on the basis of a traditional gemstone consultation. The result was that only a third were satisfied with their gemstone, which can also be traced back to the fact that a beautiful gemstone, regardless of the horoscope, can bring luck.

"Replacement stones"?

Those who cannot afford the famous 9 gemstones will be referred to cheaper “replacement stones” by their proponents: for the sun a red garnet, for the moon a moonstone, for Mars a carnelian, for Mercury a peridot, for Jupiter a topaz, for Venus a white sapphire, for Saturn an iolite, for Rahu a lapis lazuli and for Ketu a cat's eye quartz.

To speak of “replacement stones” in this context and to charge a higher price for the famous 9 gemstones, however, is objectively not justified among gemologists. For example, the yellow sapphire, one of the famous 9 precious stones in India, is not uncommon, but much more expensive than its "replacement stone" topaz.

Why gem therapy with only 9 gemstones?

Since these 9 gemstones were first mentioned in the Middle Ages, over 7000 gemstones have been discovered. Limiting gem therapy to 9 gemstones is like practicing herbalism or homeopathy with only 9 substances. The famous 9 also offer little room for maneuver in terms of color, as there is no gemstone among them that would be purple, orange, pink, black, gray or multi-colored.

Do gemstones have to be flawless?

Proponents of the famous 9 gemstones consider gemstones with flaws to be mostly harmful. They recommend natural, unheated, non-irradiated, clear and beautifully cut gemstones, weighing at least one carat, which are also ordained by a priest. However, Wilhelm's experiments show that gemstones, even if they have flaws, are not harmful and can be just as effective. In the worst case, a gemstone can trigger allergies. Eliminating heat-treated gemstones is almost impossible as 90% of all gemstones are heat-treated, even if they are touted as unheated. For healing purposes, Wilhelm only advises against irradiated, radioactive or lead-containing gemstones, as well as normal stones, as these do not bundle the energy. He recommends smaller gemstones to sensitive people. Finding a “muhurta”, a good time to wear it for the first time, is mostly not necessary for Wilhelm, since gemstone therapy can be particularly effective for health concerns and it is not expedient if someone who is in pain then stays for weeks at a time The right time should wait for the first wearing of a gemstone. Incidentally, Wilhelm himself wrote a book about “Muhurta” and his software contains a powerful module about it.

Selection of the gemstone based on the crystal structure and character color

Based on the crystal structure of the gemstone and the color of the sign to be strengthened in the horoscope, Wilhelm selects suitable stones from 168 gemstones. He assigns the cubic crystal structure to the sun, the uncrystalline crystal structure, Mars the orthorhombic, Mercury the tetragonal, Jupiter the monoclinic, Venus the hexagonal and trigonal and Saturn the triclinic.

Does the gem break the light once or twice?

Gemstones, which break the light once, are assigned to the sun and moon, because they only have one character at a time. Gemstones that refract light twice are assigned to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, because they each dominate 2 signs.

Visually positive or negative?

When a gemstone refracts light twice, two different rays are created, which can make a gemstone optically negative or optically positive. Optically negative gemstones make active, optically positive ones receptive. That is why optically negative gemstones are assigned to the male signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius and optically positive gemstones are assigned to the female signs Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces. The yellow sapphire, for example, is optically positive, i.e. makes one receptive, the yellow topaz optically negative and makes one active. The topaz has a tetragonal structure, the Mercury, the sapphire a hexagonal structure, which is ascribed to Venus.

Gemstones only for cheap planets?

Proponents of the famous 9 gemstones usually only recommend gemstones for planets that are favorable in the individual horoscope, such as the rulers of the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, and warn against gemstones for planets that are associated with unfavorable houses, such as the 6th ., 8th, 12th or the challenging 3rd and 11th, also seen from the moon and especially in the 9th sub-horoscope. Some even advise against wearing a blue sapphire because they associate it with the adverse effects of Saturn.

However, it makes little sense for Wilhelm to use only favorable planets for a gemstone treatment, since 16 different horoscopes are used in Vedic astrology and planets are inevitably positioned unfavorably in one of these horoscopes. Wilhelm recommends gemstones (1) for weak, favorable planets, (2) for unfavorable, and (3) for phase or sub-phase rulers, (4) for the ruler of Rahu or the sign he is looking at, (5) for the moon in the Hora and (6) for the sun in the natal chart [1]. How cheap a planet is, Wilhelm determines primarily on the basis of its Shad Bala, "muscle strength" and "Deeptaadi Avastha", to what extent it "shines". Caution is advised, however, and treatment should only be given in the event of illness, when a planet is 6, 8 or 12 signs away from its position in the natal chart in another sub-horoscope, because treatment of this could adversely affect the fate of the person.

Color of the planets or signs of the zodiac?

Proponents of the famous 9 gemstones associate their colors with the planets, although the classical texts of Vedic astrology do not attribute colors to the planets. Jupiter and the moon are only called "bright", which has led some translators to identify the moon as "white" and Jupiter as "yellow". Western astrologers consider Venus to be white, green, purple or even pink. It is not the planets but the signs of the zodiac that are assigned colors in the classical texts. In Sanskrit, however, there are only 3 colors, black, white and red. Other colors are described with skin colors, animal skins, objects, or as "dark". For example, the twin is “parrot-colored”, whereas the Indian parrot is usually green and has a blue neck. With the help of astrological textbooks and a logical application of color theory, Wilhelm assigned the following colors to the various signs of the zodiac: the fire sign Aries red, the lion yellow and the Sagittarius orange. The air sign Gemini is blue, Libra, originally described as “dark”, is “green” and Aquarius is purple. The earth sign Taurus is white, Virgo is sparkling and the Capricorn is colorful and multicolored. The Cancer watermark is pink, Scorpio is brown, and the Pisces are clear and colorless. In addition, "gray of Rahu, black gemstone of Ketu," according to Parashara.

The following table shows the color of the signs of the zodiac, the areas in the body that they cover according to Parashara or due to the meridian, as well as their meaning according to Jaimini.

The color of which sign?

According to Wilhelm, a weak, favorable planet can be energized with the color of its root sign (mulatrikona), a weak unfavorable planet with the color of its exaltation sign, and a strong unfavorable planet or a planet that is associated with Saturn or the sun with the color of the symbol in which he stands. For example, Mars is humiliated in Cancer and leads to irritability and a lack of wellbeing. By wearing a pink gemstone with the crystal shape of Mars, one can induce Mars to strengthen the good qualities of Cancer. If the matching gemstone in a certain color is not available, Wilhelm recommends using the gemstone of a friendly planet or Jupiter of the same color, or a gemstone for the ruler of this sign, but not for Saturn or the sun.

Horoscope not required

Even regardless of the horoscope, the colors of the signs in connection with different gemstones can have different effects. With white as the color of the bull, a white gemstone strengthens emotional well-being and material security. If the white gemstone has the crystal structure of Jupiter, it strengthens material security through the husband, counseling, prayers or children and all other properties that are associated with Jupiter. If the white gem has the crystal structure of Venus, it strengthens it through a partnership, women or the sale of vehicles, and Mars through the trade in houses or precious stones.

Since Taurus is connected to the kidney meridian, a white Venus stone can also be recommended for kidney pain without looking at the horoscope.

Pearls

Pearls are used for healing purposes, regardless of the horoscope. Since these also contain calcite and aragonite, pearls can unite Venus and Mars. Wilhelm recommends a pearl in the color of the mark that is suffering. When he has a toothache, Wilhelm even puts a white pearl in his mouth.

Gemstone Tint and Caste

The tint of a gem determines its caste. You can see the tint of a gemstone, regardless of its color, when you place it on white paper. A light, pale or white tint is a brahmin or priest and is used for spiritual development when success, money and partnership are no longer an issue. A reddish tint is a kshatriya, a warrior and makes brave. A yellowish or greenish tinge is a vaishya, merchant or artist, and favors practical skills and income. A dark, black or dark blue tint is a sudra, a servant for survival, for overcoming fear and enjoying this moment.

How do I know if the gem is working?

According to Wilhelm, a gemstone can act like a stimulant or an acupuncture session. A boy who struggled at school received a 12-carat green zircon from Wilhelm for 40 euros because his sun was lowered in the scales. After just 2 days he was able to concentrate better and got A's in the spelling tests. A treatment that has not brought at least a slight improvement after 3 to 4 days can confidently be discontinued, in the case of chronic problems after a week, says Wilhelm. If you are not sure whether a gemstone will work, you should take it off and wear it again at a later date. Frawley, on the other hand, thinks that it can take several months for a gemstone to work.

Is Gem Therapy Right For Me?

Gemstone therapy is particularly suitable for health concerns, but also to energize certain areas of life. If you don't feel comfortable with a gemstone, just take it off. Since Mars masters gemstones, its strength and that of its signs Scorpio and Aries in the natal chart and the sub-horoscopes, but also of Jupiter, the lucky charm, shows how effective gemstone therapy is for a person in the respective area. In addition, the sub-horoscopes 27 (Bhamsa), which shows individual strengths, and 30 (Trimsamsa), the health horoscope are related to Mars and respond better to gemstone therapy.

Suggestions for first wearing?

Wilhelm does not answer the question of what to do before wearing the gemstone for the first time and does not recommend any special rituals. Frawley, a proponent of the famous 9 gemstones, recommends cleaning a gemstone in seawater or a mountain stream before wearing it for the first time, or soaking it overnight in water, milk, yogurt, ghee or sugar, ideally in a copper, silver or gold vessel. Nerve tonic herbs can be added. The gem should be treated like a sacred object. In order to become aware of the divinity of the gemstone, one can get up at sunrise and meditate with the gemstone, imagining it in the forehead chakra and associating the highest intention with the gemstone. Frawley also recommends including the gemstone in regular meditation with a suitable, planetary mantra and yantra.

Where should you wear a gemstone?

There is a consensus among gem therapists that the gem should touch the skin. Wilhelm recommends wearing the gemstone as close as possible to the place where it hurts, also with a sticking plaster or adhesive tape. He admits that it doesn't really matter where you wear the gemstone. Proponents of the famous 9 gemstones usually recommend wearing a gemstone on your finger or inserting it into a prayer chain. Necklaces also affect the throat chakra, according to Frawley, and are good for Mercury and improving communication skills and nerves. Rath (2007), a proponent of the famous 9 gemstones, says the right hand thumb is the ascendant, the index finger is Jupiter, the middle finger is Rahu, the ring finger is the sun, and the little finger is Buddha. On the left hand is the thumb ketu, the index finger Venus, the ring finger Saturn and the little finger the moon. The little finger should also stand for relationships.

How many gemstones should you wear?

Proponents of the famous 9 gemstones are not in favor of wearing multiple stones at once and then only if you have a stronger main stone. However, Wilhelm does not limit the number of gemstones. He also doesn't recommend a main stone, but says that you should test each gemstone individually first to see what effect it has.

Hardness and weight

Proponents of the famous 9 gemstones usually recommend a weight of at least 1.5 carats, preferably 2 or 3 carats or the largest gemstone one can afford. Wilhelm, on the other hand, says that one carat and a hardness of 6 are sufficient.

Buy gemstones

Experimentation is important in gemstone therapy, which is why Wilhelm recommends testing a gemstone for a few days if possible before buying it or asking the dealer if he can take it back. Inexpensive yet fully-fledged gemstones can easily be bought on Ebay or from wholesalers. If you want an expensive gemstone for special occasions, such as a sapphire or emerald, you should buy it on site from a reputable jeweler. If you don't want to afford a Venus stone, you can buy a cheaper Mercury stone, since Mercury is a friend of Venus. For people who are skilled at handicrafts, Wilhelm recommends forging the gemstones themselves. He has been doing this himself for many years with tools that he bought for $ 100 in a catalog and with the help of books borrowed from the library.

[1] Wilhelm determines the planetary phase on the basis of Vimsottari Dasa, Cara Dasa and also on the basis of the natural age of a person. The moon rules life up to the first year of life, Mars from the first to the third year of life, Mercury from 3 to 12, Venus from 12 to 32, Jupiter from 32 to 50, the sun from 50 to 70 and Saturn from 70 to 120. The planets that are comfortable only need a gem if they are influenced by unfavorable planets.
