All websites have a database

Create and manage a database on your web hosting

Last updated on 09/21/2020

Databases (DBs) are used to store so-called dynamic elements such as comments or articles. These databases are now used in practically all modern content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress or Joomla! used.

This guide explains the first steps with a database in your OVHcloud webhosting and provides you with basic information on how to manage it.

  • You have an OVHcloud web hosting offer.
  • A database included in your web hosting is available to you.
  • You have access to the OVHcloud Customer Center and have the necessary authorizations to manage web hosting.

In practical application

Step 1: Access the web hosting database management

Log into your OVHcloud customer center and select the area in the top menu. Click in the left menu bar and select the relevant web hosting. Then go to the tab.

The table in this area contains all of the databases that were created as part of your web hosting offering.

Step 2: create the database

There are two ways to create a new database:

  • You have not yet created a database\: Click the button.

  • You have already created a database\: Click on the button and then on.

In the window that opens, select the appropriate information and click.

Database engineSelect the engine that the database will use. Databases contained in an OVHcloud webhosting offer are only available with the MySQL engine.
Database versionSelect the version used by the database engine. Make sure your website is compatible with the version you choose.
Database typeSelect the size of the database. Size refers to the amount of space your database has available to store data.

Then fill in the requested information and click.

userEnter a specific username that will be associated with your database.
passwordEnter a password for this user and confirm it.

Verify that all of the information displayed in the summary is correct. If so, click to start creating the database. You can repeat this process as often as necessary to create multiple databases (as long as the maximum number of inclusive databases is not exceeded).

For security reasons, please adhere to the conditions displayed when entering the password. We also recommend:

  • not to use the same password twice

  • use a password that is unrelated to your personal information (e.g. avoid your surname, first name or your date of birth)

  • Renew your password regularly

  • Not to write down your password on paper or to email it to others

  • Not to save your password in your web browser, even if it asks you to

When changing a database password, keep in mind that all applications that access this database must be updated accordingly.

Step 3: manage the database

These instructions do not replace the support of a professional webmaster. We recommend that you contact a specialized service provider and / or the publisher of the service if you need help. Unfortunately, we cannot offer you any support for external services. Further information can be found in the “Additional information” section of these instructions.

You are now ready to use your database. To do this, you need your login data: the username and password you specified, the name of the database and the server address. This information is required so that your website can connect to the database.

Depending on the software used, this connection may have to be configured manually or via an interface generated by the website backend. Since this process is more about configuring your website than the services provided by OVHcloud, we recommend that you use the appropriate online resources.

Access the phpMyAdmin interface

OVHcloud provides you with an online tool for database management: phpMyAdmin. You can find the access link for this application in the tab. Click to the right of the relevant database and select.

The login data are already pre-filled in the new window; only the database password has to be entered. In this way you can also check your current password, for example if a CMS issues the error message “permission denied”.

Use database backups

Automatic snapshots are taken daily for each web hosting database (up to 32 units). You can therefore easily restore a previous version of a database via your OVHcloud customer center.

To check the available snapshots and to see when they were created, click on the symbol to the right of the green circle in your database table. You can also download any backup of a database from there. You can find more information on this topic in our guide “Exporting a backup of a web hosting database”.

Understand common problems

Too many connections

Web hosting databases are limited to 30 simultaneous connections (system variable max_connections). SQL queries should therefore be optimized accordingly in order to avoid this error. If the problem persists, you should consider alternative measures, for example switching to a private SQL database or upgrading your web hosting.

Connection errors and "not found" messages

It is recommended that you always use the actual database name for scripts and configuration files instead of IP addresses or localhost to use.

Database overquota

If a web hosting database exceeds the recommended storage space, it is automatically switched to "read only" / "select only" mode. The administrator will receive a notification by email.

After the database has been optimized (cleaned), you can recalculate your quota via your OVHcloud customer center so that the database is unlocked. It is recommended to download the database, revise the content locally and then replace the database via import. Please refer to this guide for more information.
