How to become a successful copywriter in six steps

So there are numerous exciting projects and lucrative jobs for agencies and copywriters to compete for. This applies not only to the free market: whoever comes first, writes first. Unfortunately, there is no magic formula with which you can become successful overnight. It's not that easy to become a successful copywriter. However, a little effort and a clever strategy almost always pay off. 1. Put every word on the gold scales!
Even if it seems obvious: if you want to earn money with texts, you have to be able to write. Correct spelling, appropriate punctuation and impeccable grammar form the foundation of your work - good knowledge in these areas is therefore essential.
The bigger challenges, however, consist in structuring texts logically, connecting trains of thought, using the right style, presenting complex topics simply, formulating them in a varied way and captivating the reader with every sentence and every heading. It is not always easy to distinguish between right and wrong or good and bad. Nevertheless, guidelines also apply to these more subjective criteria, which you can use as a guide.

2. Get to the bottom of things!
The most beautiful text is of no use to your readers if the content is too superficial or - in the worst case - not correct. Therefore, you should pay as much attention to it as to the outside, i.e. structure, expression, spelling and Co. Perhaps you are already very familiar with the topic you are supposed to write about. But even if you are an expert in a certain area, you cannot always know everything.
Therefore, play it safe, especially when it comes to details: When proofreading, check the truthfulness of your statements again and research thoroughly before you start writing. Use at least two reputable sources - not just to avoid possible copyright infringements. 3. The customer is king!
Especially when you are writing about a topic that is close to your heart, it can happen that you contribute your personal opinion in the heat of the moment. Unless you are writing for your own blog or are supposed to write a subjective comment on a topic, your private views have no place in your texts. So stay neutral: If your texts contain value judgments, there is a high risk that your readers will feel offended and the client will appear in a bad light.
As difficult as it may be, for you as a web writer, the reader should always be the focus. There are two ways to do this:

Especially with product descriptions, only the often dry product details are quickly listed and the reader is overwhelmed with information. He can also find such information in data sheets and on manufacturer websites when he is looking for them. It is therefore much more important to take the interested parties by the hand: Avoid technical jargon and do not just emphasize What a product can, but rather, how so this property is so beneficial for the user.
Good: "An SSD with 500 GB of storage space is built into the notebook, which significantly reduces loading times."
Not so good: "An SSD with 500 GB of storage space is built into the notebook."
Think about the user behavior of the readers
Make it as easy as possible for your readers to grasp the content of your texts. Use meaningful subheadings and short paragraphs as well as precise wording so that the attention of your target group does not decrease. Even if you can write like Thomas Mann, nested sentences are out of place on the Internet. It is also best to include particularly important terms and keywords at the beginning of a paragraph and in the headings - this is how you look at them even when you scan the text.

4. Market yourself!
Even if you work in the background for most jobs, that doesn't mean that you have to eke out a shadowy existence. Use your marketing experience and draw attention to your work. It doesn't always have to be smartphones or computers, just write a product description about yourself for a change:

Even if you only write part-time, a homepage is a good decision. Surely there is one topic that you would like to blog about. You dare! This will give you practice in writing and learn a lot about the possibilities of online marketing.
5. Expand your portfolio!
Speaking of online marketing: Do you want your texts to hit like a bomb? Then get to grips with the basics of content marketing. After all, every type of content has its special features that need to be taken into account. Once you've internalized the difference between landing pages, category descriptions, e-books, blog posts and other types of text, good texts turn into even better ones. In addition, with a little background knowledge, it will be much easier for you to understand your clients.
Don't worry, you don't have to become an SEO professional to make your texts fit for the web. If you put yourself in the shoes of your readers and approach the matter with the determination to add as much added value as possible, you are already on the right track. Therefore, see keywords and other SEO guidelines as a guide and plan the structure of your text accordingly. This is how you usually manage to write a text that convinces both man and machine.
6. Become a relationship expert!
When working in the home office without colleagues, there is a great risk that interpersonal relationships will be neglected - especially if you work anonymously, as at Textbroker. However, if you want to win customers over in the long term, it pays to give them time and attention. Be attentive, ask questions, and use personal messages to help build a relationship.
Of course, not every client - or author - is interested in closer collaboration. But if you are looking for direct contact with your customers, you will understand better what is important to them when it comes to the commissioned texts. In addition, there is often the opportunity to actively participate in content planning and to put your own personal stamp on the finished texts. This often results in long-term cooperation.
